In response to the scorching heatwave gripping Kolkata, where temperatures have surged beyond 42 degrees Celsius, the Calcutta High Court has issued a notification granting exemption to lawyers from wearing advocate gowns during the summer season. Following similar measures adopted by other High Courts like the Karnataka HC due to rising temperatures, the decision aims to alleviate discomfort for legal practitioners appearing before the court.

The Registrar General of the Calcutta High Court, acting upon instructions from Chief Justice Sivagnanam, issued a notice confirming the exemption. The notice explicitly stated, "It is hereby notified for information of all concerned that, upon consideration of the ongoing inclement weather combined with heat wave, the Hon'ble the Chief Justice has been pleased to direct as follows: Taking note of the weather, wearing of Advocates' gown is exempted till the Court reopens after Summer Vacation on 10.06.2024."
